Clever And Easy DIY Home Decor

Clever And Easy DIY Home Decor

Have you ever looked around your house and thought it needs a change? You start looking online at new chairs, end tables, bookcases, shelving units, and think: "Wow, that is a ridiculous amount of money to spend - I just can't justify it right now."

Look no further! With just a little bit of creativity and the magic of DIY, you can turn old/existing furniture into something super unique but still practical and functional. Some of the best pieces of art, furniture, and decor are up-cycled and/or re-purposed items from antique stores or yard sales. Not only are they a one-of-a-kind statement, but they literally cost hundreds of dollars less than what you see when browsing for something new.

The options are endless when it comes to deciding what you want and how you are going to achieve it. If you want to start fresh and ditch the furniture or pieces you have now, the best place to start is a local antique shop or swap meet. This is where you can score some of the best deals that come with a story and history unlike anything you can find in a commercial store.

The first step is brainstorming and envisioning something that you think would look really spectacular in your home.

The second step is figuring out if you want a piece of art or furniture that serves a purpose or is simply for aesthetics.

The third step is to find a place that is going to have the style of piece that you want. Sometimes the best swap meets can be a few hours away amidst the countryside or the outskirts of a small town. If that is the case, make a day of it! Otherwise there are always plenty of antique shops that are open all year round. During the warmer seasons, visit neighborhood yard sales. Not only is this the cheapest option, but you are supporting local families and your community.

Below are some great ideas that you can easily do if you are new to DIY projects:

1. Old Window Coffee Table Top

Replace the plain Jane tabletop you currently have with an old window that has been sanded down. You can leave the original wear and tear for a unique look with a clear coat, or you can stain or paint it. (This is a great way to add a pop of color to your home, utilizing a bold primary color.)

2. Dresser Turned Into Portable Bar

Take a dresser and remove all of the drawers. Add vintage metal grates to serve as doors. This is a great idea to save space for all of your barware and cocktail-making tools that are taking up space in your kitchen!

3. Old Bookcase Turned Into Exquisite Accent Piece

Rustic, charming and very functional! Find some textured wallpaper to create an organic or elegant theme. Utilize this for either a winter accessory organizer or a home for all of your little plants and trinkets.

4. Wood Pallet / TV Wall Accent

This is perfect for anyone who has their TV mounted on the wall and has unsightly cords hanging down in plain sight. Cut, sand, and stain each piece into different shapes and colors. Make sure you create enough so that you can follow a fluid pattern from above the TV all the way down to the outlets.

5. Grandfather Clock Case Turned Into Bathroom Storage

These are the best finds! There's so much you can do with these historical beauties, such as storage for wine glasses, plates, glasses, bowls, cups, and the list goes on. The best we have seen is a fabulous accent piece for the bathroom that holds all of your toilet paper, wash clothes, and any overstock of toiletries tucked away in a corner. This is a great accent piece that actually does not need much work besides a light sanding, a few shelves added, and a soft white wash stain to complete the look.
