The Gardener's Cottage is believed to have been built in early ''Elegant Eighties'' to house the Gardener for Fair Field, a mansion built in Lake Geneva in 1883 by Buckingham Sturges. Buckingham's brother Shelton had just built Maple Lawn Lodge a few years earlier. The remains of Fair Field may still be seen on the highest prominence of the Sturwood Subdivision.
